TGHA Needs Short Term Volunteers

At this time of year, there are a number of short term volunteer roles that are critical to the season starting well for all.  Can you pitch in to help?
Please rsvp to Mary at the contact info below.

Equipment loan team--crew of adults and older teens is needed on Oct. 20 for Try Girls Hockey and Oct. 12 for Take a Shot at Hockey.

Hosts for events--volunteers are needed especially for Oct. 20 Try Girls Hockey and Oct. 27 Open House--for refreshments, off-ice activities, decorations, etc.

Delivering publicity posters and fliers--TGHA and IYHA distributed 2000+ fliers to elementary school students in September about Registration Day and other events for newcomers.  We need to distribute some other publicity materials in October.  We have key places to reach but also open to your ideas.

Girl Scouts needed--Girls hockey players who are current or former Girl Scouts are invited to assist at Put the Biscuit in the Net events Oct 5, 6 and 12. Please rsvp first.

Event assistants--Players who are in middle or high school are welcome to volunteer to assist on-ice or off-ice during Oct. 12 and 20 events.  Please rsvp first.

Financial Aid Requests

As an organization, TGHA works to keep member fees as low as possible. We offer two check payment plans as well as half time and quarter time options for the House programs. Financial aid is also available; funds are limited so it is recommended that interested members complete the financial aid process as soon as possible. Download form from:

Skate Sharpening

Phil's Skate Shop 2008-09 schedule:

Mondays-on call
Tuesdays and Thursdays 4-7 pm
Saturdays 8-10 am

Skates can be dropped during business hours at Inlet Glass and Mirror.  In addition, they are using Instant Replay Sports (at both store locations 3rd St and The Rink) for drops.  Skates are sharpened and returned to drop point next day. Someone from the shop sharpens M/W/F even though there are no posted hours.

Cornell Women's Hockey Update

The leaves are starting to turn, our student athletes are tired of off-ice training and the first rounds of prelims have begun.  That can only mean one thing.  We are almost at the beginning of another hockey season!  Our team has come back in great shape and with nine new faces added to a hard working group of upperclassmen it should be a fun year.

This past summer we had two players participate in the Under 22 series between Team Canada and Team USA.  Freshman Chelsea Karpenko and sophomore Rebecca Johnston competed for Team Canada.  They won the series versus the USA two games to one.

Our team alongside some TGHA families participated in FoodNet's Meals on Wheels Event on Saturday  Sept. 6th and helped FoodNet raise over $13, 000 to help feed the elderly  and those in need around Tompkins County.  The team led the walk along the beautiful waterfront trail at Cass Park. It was a fun day for everyone involved.

We promise to be an exciting team to watch this season.   We made tremendous improvements last year and we continue to get better.   I look forward to seeing you at our games this year.  We will be looking to spotlight a number of our competitions this year.  Our first exhibition scrimmages are against the Stoney Creek Sabres from Canada on Oct. 17th at 7pm at Lynah.  The following day you could see a double header as we play the Durham Lightning at 3 pm on Oct. 18th and then the Cornell Men play that night at 7 pm.

We are helping to fight breast cancer this year as a team by participating in the American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer on Oct. 5th in Binghamton, and we hope you will join us.  Making Strides Against Breast
Cancer is our opportunity to honor and celebrate breast cancer survivors, educate women about early detection and prevention, and raise money to fund lifesaving research and support programs to help fight breast cancer.

Below is a link to our personal page. We hope you will visit our site and sign up to join our team. If you prefer, you can start your own team, sign up to walk as an individual, or help by making a donation.

Please join our team and walk with us to experience an incredible day of inspiration and meaning, and to provide hope for all people facing breast cancer.
