Practice 6 |
| | | Breakout flow drills and movement in the neutral zone. Emphasis was put on skating TO the pass and moving constantly to either get open or pick up an opposing player. Forwards need to be flexible in swinging low and switching lanes on a regroup. We often end up standing still in the neutral zone, sometimes so high that the other team steps up and intercepts the passes coming from our defense. If we fumble the puck, try sending it back to a safe place (defense) and starting over with a regroup. This way we maintain possession (rather than panicking and blindly throwing it up the middle), create better passing angles (by getting low and out towards the boards), and gain momentum for the attack (as opposed to starting from a standstill). |

Game 5 vs. Sirens |
| | | First, great job maintaining position on D-zone coverage. It was easy to get drawn in to the play as the Sirens are fast and can move the puck around well. Wingers were smart not to get up too close to their points, while a D was firmly planted in front of the net. Note to the D: don't get too mesmerized by the puck in the corner, you need to watch that back door player waiting right behind you with an open net. Also, no need for more than one player to skate behind the net as that will only leave them with more passing options out in front. Secondly, I thought it was great that we weren't too agressive on the forecheck. The first forward would go, while the next two hung back a little around the blue line, in a good position to cut off passes and backcheck when necessary. |

Congratulations to the "team on the left" (Team 1 below) for winning the first Furies Cup game, 3-2! |
| | | Note on defensive zone coverage:
As a winger in your defensive zone, you want to cover your point (the other team's defenseman) when their team has control of the puck. A good place to be is somewhere along the top of the big circle in the D-zone, head on a swivel, back to the net, one hand on stick to make yourself bigger and cut off passes. This way you can do one of three things:
- Step up to the D if they get the puck and prevent a shot on net
- Get a stick on one of their forwards who may be skating out of the corner towards the high slot for a shot on net (essentially cutting them off but still being in a high enough position that you could get up to your point)
- Easily scoot over to the hash marks if there is a change of possession and your team now has the puck, putting you in a good position for a breakout
If you are finding it difficult to tell when we have possession, remain somewhere around the top of the circle, maybe a little closer to the boards so that you are giving your player down low a better passing angle should we gain control of the puck. If our team is having difficulty keeping possession, the main thing we should be thinking about the breakout is GET IT OUT. That usually means a hard-out along the boards, chipping it off the glass, skating hard through the other team's defenseman.....keeping it simple, as opposed to trying to make a play through the middle. |
